Goethe Exam Fees in India: Levels, Centres and What They Cost

This page explains what the Goethe exam levels are for, what sitting one in India involves, and how the cost of the exam compares with the cost of preparing for it. It does not quote official fees as fact — the Goethe-Institut sets those, and only the exam centre you book with can tell you the current figure.

The levels, and what each one is used for

A1 is the entry certificate. In practical terms it exists for one reason for most candidates in India: German law requires proof of basic German for a spouse or family reunification visa, and for an au pair placement. Nothing above A1 is required for that visa, which is why many candidates take A1 and never take another German exam.

A2 sits between the first sentences and the level that training and professional recognition ask for. It is rarely a legal requirement on its own; it is most often taken as a checkpoint on the way to B1, or because an employer or a course asks for it.

B1 is the level that changes what you can do. It is the language requirement for the vocational training visa, the usual entry point into professional recognition procedures including nursing, and a common requirement for university preparation routes. Above B1 the certificate stops being a formality and starts being the thing a job depends on.

Where the exams are taken in India

Goethe exams in India are held at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan centres and at licensed exam partners. The main institutes are in the large cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad among them — and licensed partners sit exams elsewhere. Two things vary by centre and are worth checking before you plan anything: which sessions are offered in the next few months, and whether the level you need can be booked module by module or only as a whole exam.

Places fill. Registration for a popular session can close weeks ahead, and a candidate with a visa deadline should book the exam date first and plan the studying backwards from it, not the other way around.

What the exam costs, roughly

LevelApproximate feeIf you fail
A1around ₹9,400If you do not pass, the whole exam is repeated, at the full fee.
A2around ₹10,600If you do not pass, the whole exam is repeated, at the full fee.
B1around ₹18,800If you do not pass, a single failed module can be repeated on its own.

What preparation costs, compared with the exam

The comparison that matters is not preparation against zero. It is preparation against a second exam fee. If the exam is the largest single number in your budget, then anything that materially improves your chance of passing at the first attempt is being measured against paying that number twice.

The placement test, the grammar handbook, the vocabulary lists, practice and one full mock exam are free and stay free, including the honest assessment of whether you are ready. What is paid for is the rehearsal: the rest of the mock exams, and the AI grading of writing and speaking.

Prüfungsmeister is an independent preparation service. We are not a Goethe exam centre, we do not register candidates, and we cannot book your exam.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Goethe exam in India?

The fee depends on the level and on the exam centre, and it is set by the Goethe-Institut rather than by us. The figures on this page are our own last-checked estimates for comparison. Take the actual amount from the centre where you intend to register.

Do exam fees differ between cities in India?

They can. Different centres and licensed partners publish their own fees and their own session calendars, so it is worth checking more than one centre if you can travel.

Is the fee lower if I only repeat one module?

At levels where the exam is modular, a single module can be booked and paid for on its own, which costs less than the whole exam. At levels that are not modular, failing means repeating the entire exam at the full fee. Confirm which applies to your level and centre.

Is there a discount for students?

Some centres offer reduced fees for their own course participants. This is a centre-level decision, not a national one, so ask the centre directly.

Does Prüfungsmeister register me for the exam?

No. We are an independent preparation service with no connection to the Goethe-Institut. Registration, fees and exam dates are handled entirely by the exam centre.
