German B1 Mock Test: What the Exam Contains and How to Rehearse It
A German B1 mock test is a complete rehearsal of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam: the same four modules, the same parts in the same order, the same number of items, and the same clock. It is not a quiz. Its purpose is to tell you what you would score if you sat the exam this week, and which module would cost you the certificate.
What the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam contains
B1 is examined in four modules, 46 items in total across the written parts. The modules can be taken together on one day or, at most exam centres, separately — each module is certified on its own, so a candidate who fails one repeats only that one. The table below is the structure our mock exams are built and scored against.

What each of the four parts actually tests
Lesen is not a vocabulary test. Across its five parts you read a blog entry, a press article, short advertisements, reader comments and a set of rules or instructions. Each part asks a different question of you: true or false, multiple choice, matching a person to an advertisement, deciding whether a commenter agrees. Candidates lose marks here by reading for words they recognise instead of for what the text claims.
Hören is where the timing is unforgiving. Some parts are played twice and some only once, and you cannot pause. The table above says which is which, and that is worth knowing before the day: a candidate who expects a second play that is not coming stops taking notes on the first.
Schreiben has three tasks with different registers — an informal email, a forum post, and a formal email. The word counts are short. The marks are not for length; they are for covering every point in the prompt, in the right register, with grammar that holds up. A forum post written in the tone of a letter to an authority loses marks even when every sentence is correct.
Sprechen is taken with a partner. You plan something together, give a short presentation, and then respond to your partner's presentation with feedback and a question. That last part surprises people: you are marked on how you react to something you have not prepared.
How a mock test works
A mock test is only useful if it is uncomfortable. That means the whole module in one sitting, timed, without looking anything up, without pausing the audio, and without checking an answer before the end. A "mock" you stop halfway through tells you what you know. A mock you finish tells you what you can do under a clock, which is the only thing the exam measures.
Take the first one early, before you feel ready. A score you dislike in week one is information. The same score discovered in the week of the exam is a problem. Then work the weakest module rather than the most comfortable one, and sit the next mock only once you have changed something.
How our mock exams are timed
Prüfungsmeister has 29 full B1 mock exams, each with a time limit of 150 to 165 minutes. Each one follows the structure in the table above, part by part, with the same number of items.
The clock runs per module, the way the exam runs it, and the audio in Hören plays the number of times the spec above allows and then stops. Writing and speaking are graded against the official rubric rather than left for you to mark yourself, because those are the two modules a self-study course cannot honestly score and the two that most often decide the result.
After a mock you get a per-module breakdown, not one number. One number hides the problem: a candidate at 62 per cent overall might be comfortable in three modules and failing one, and only the breakdown says which.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Goethe B1 exam take?
The written modules and the oral exam are timed separately, and exam centres publish the exact schedule for the session you book. Our B1 mock exams run to 150 to 165 minutes, which is the time limit we set from the exam format.
Can I take the B1 modules separately?
At most Goethe exam centres, yes — B1 is a modular exam, so each of the four modules is certified on its own and a failed module can be repeated by itself. Confirm this with the centre where you book, because availability of single modules varies by session.
How many mock tests should I do before the exam?
Enough that the format is boring and the clock is not. In practice that means one early to find your weakest module, several partial sittings of that module while you work on it, and at least two full timed run-throughs close to the exam.
Is a mock test the same as the real exam paper?
No. Past Goethe papers are the property of the Goethe-Institut. A mock test reproduces the structure, the item types, the item counts and the timing, using material written for practice.
Does a good mock score mean I will pass?
It means you would probably pass a paper of that difficulty on that day. It is evidence, not a guarantee, and it is only evidence if the mock was sat under exam conditions.
Not sure which level you are actually at?
18 questions, about five minutes, no account needed. You get every correct answer and the one skill that is holding you back most.
