Konjunktiv II: Unreal Conditions and If Sentences

At A2 Konjunktiv II is about politeness. At B1 it does its other job: describing things that are not the case — what you would do if, what you would have done, what you wish were true.

Building the if sentence

The pattern is wenn + Konjunktiv II in one clause and würde or another Konjunktiv II form in the other: Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen.

Both halves are hypothetical, so both need the subjunctive — a point English speakers miss, since English often keeps a plain past in the if half. The word order is the ordinary subordinate clause order: verb at the end after wenn, and the main clause verb immediately after the comma when the wenn clause comes first.

You can also drop wenn altogether and start with the verb: Hätte ich mehr Zeit, würde ich mehr lesen. This is more literary and worth recognising in reading.

The unreal past

To say what would have happened, use hätte or wäre plus a past participle: Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich früher gekommen. If I had known that, I would have come earlier.

Which auxiliary you use follows exactly the same rule as the perfect tense: verbs of movement and change of state take wäre, everything else takes hätte. So there is no new rule here — only a new combination of two you already have.

Wishes work the same way, usually with doch or nur: Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte!

Examples

Mistakes to avoid

The errors are using a plain past tense in the wenn clause on the English pattern, and using würde in both halves where hätte or wäre belongs.

How this is tested in the exam

Hypothetical language is what B1 speaking tasks are built on. Sprechen Teil 1 asks you and a partner to plan something together, which means proposing, objecting and suggesting alternatives — all Konjunktiv II. In Schreiben, a forum post arguing a position usually needs at least one wenn sentence to be convincing.

Frequently asked questions

How do you form an if sentence in German?

Wenn plus Konjunktiv II in one clause and würde or another Konjunktiv II form in the other: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. Both halves are subjunctive.

How do you say I would have in German?

With hätte or wäre plus a past participle: Ich hätte das gemacht, ich wäre gekommen. The choice follows the same rule as the perfect tense.

Can I use würde in both halves of the sentence?

It is better not to. Use hätte or wäre in the wenn clause where the verb is haben or sein, and reserve würde for the main clause.

Can wenn be left out?

Yes. Starting with the verb has the same meaning: Hätte ich mehr Zeit, würde ich mehr lesen. This is more literary and common in written texts.
