Konjunktiv II: How to Be Polite in German
German has a specific verb form for softening a request or an opinion. Using the plain present tense instead is grammatically correct but socially blunt — the difference between I want a coffee and I would like a coffee, and it is noticed.
The five forms you actually need
At A2 you need five, and they cover almost every polite situation: hätte (would have), wäre (would be), könnte (could), würde (would) and möchte (would like).
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Könnten Sie mir helfen? Das wäre super. Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen?
Note the umlaut in every one of them. It is what distinguishes the polite form from the plain past: konnte is could as a fact about the past, könnte is could as a polite request. One dot changes the meaning entirely.
Würde plus infinitive covers everything else
Most verbs do not have a Konjunktiv II form in everyday use. Instead, German builds one with würde plus the infinitive at the end: Ich würde gern nach Berlin fahren.
The exceptions are precisely the five above, which have their own forms and where würde sounds clumsy. Nobody says ich würde gern einen Kaffee haben; they say ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. So the working rule is: use the special form if the verb has one, otherwise use würde.
Examples
- Könnten Sie mir bitte das Salz reichen?Could you please pass me the salt?
- Ich hätte gerne ein Stück Kuchen.I would like a piece of cake.
Mistakes to avoid
The errors are dropping the umlaut, which turns a polite request into a plain past statement, and using würde with haben or sein where the dedicated forms belong.
How this is tested in the exam
Sprechen Teil 3 at A1 and A2 asks you to make and respond to a request, and politeness is part of what is assessed there — a request phrased in the flat present costs you marks even when every word is correct. In Schreiben, any message to someone you address as Sie is expected to use these forms.
Frequently asked questions
What is Konjunktiv II used for in German?
For polite requests, wishes and hypothetical statements. At A2 it is mostly about politeness: hätte, wäre, könnte, würde and möchte.
What is the difference between konnte and könnte?
Konnte is the simple past, a fact about what you were able to do. Könnte is Konjunktiv II, a polite or hypothetical could. The umlaut is the only difference in writing.
When should I use würde instead of a special form?
With any verb that has no everyday Konjunktiv II form of its own, which is most of them. Use the dedicated forms for haben, sein, the modals and mögen.
Is ich möchte a form of mögen?
Yes, it is the Konjunktiv II of mögen and means would like. It is far more polite than ich will and is the normal way to order or request something.
