Free Goethe B1 Mock Test: Hören (Listening)

This is the listening part of a full Goethe B1 practice exam — 20 questions in 4 parts, with the real recordings. No account, no payment, no email address. We time you with a stopwatch rather than a countdown: the Goethe-Institut publishes the official length for this section and your exam centre confirms it for your session, and we do not state a duration we have not verified.

B1 listening is where most people find out their German is better on paper than by ear. Because B1 is modular at most centres, it's also the part people most often have to retake on its own — exactly why it's worth measuring before you book.

What this part asks of you

The 4 parts go from short everyday announcements to a radio discussion and an informational talk. You judge statements, choose between options, and match opinions to the people who held them. The speech is naturally connected, people interrupt each other, and the register shifts between casual and formal.

Most B1 listening scores are decided by the multi-speaker discussion. Every voice sounds reasonable, the question asks who meant what, and mixing up two speakers just once costs several points at once.

What you get at the end

Your score out of 20, and the 4 parts separately. At a modular level, this breakdown has real consequences: it tells you whether to book listening now, or leave it until last.

Before you start

Headphones, a quiet room, no pausing. B1 listening tests sustained concentration as much as vocabulary — practising with interruptions trains the wrong thing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the audio the same speed as the real exam?

Yes. Natural speaking speed, with exactly the pauses the real exam gives you, and no others.

Is B1 listening harder than B1 reading?

For most people, yes — not because the German is harder, but because you can't go back. You can re-read a text within the time limit; you can't re-hear a recording.

Do I need an account for this test?

No. You can do the whole part and see your score and part-by-part result without giving us anything. An account is only needed to see the correct answers and to save your result.

Why can't I see the answers without an account?

Because the answers are the valuable part. Giving them to everyone who loads the page would turn this from a test into a list to copy. Your score and your weak parts stay free. Always.

Is this a real Goethe-Institut exam paper?

No. Old exam papers belong to the Goethe-Institut. This is a practice paper built to the same structure — the same parts, the same number of questions, the same task types — and it's one of the real papers inside Prüfungsmeister, not a shortened version.

Can I try the other parts too?

Yes. Every level has a free page for reading, listening, writing and speaking, plus one for the full exam. Reading and listening are marked automatically; writing and speaking are shown to you as tasks, because marking them needs an examiner — and that's what a pass covers.
