Free Goethe A2 Mock Test: Schreiben (Writing)

These are the writing tasks from a full Goethe A2 practice exam — 2 tasks in 2 parts. Read them, attempt them, time yourself — no account needed. We time you with a stopwatch rather than a countdown: the Goethe-Institut publishes the official length for this section and your exam centre confirms it for your session, and we do not state a duration we have not verified.

Read this before you start: what you write here is not marked. There's no answer key for writing — it's judged against the official criteria, and that's what an account and a pass are for. Better said now than after you've written.

2 tasks · no account needed · not marked

What this part asks of you

Two short, real pieces of writing. One informal — a message to a friend arranging something, apologising, or explaining something. The other more formal: a message to a school, an employer, a landlord, or an office. Both give you content points that all have to appear.

The difference from A1 is register. At A2 you're expected to know that Sehr geehrte Frau Weber and Hallo Anna aren't interchangeable — and that the formal message needs a different closing from the informal one.

How it's marked in the real exam

Four things: whether all the content points are covered, whether the text holds together, whether the register fits the reader, and how accurate the grammar is. A missing content point costs more than several small grammar mistakes — candidates regularly lose marks by writing beautifully about two of the three things they were asked for.

What you can do here without an account

See both tasks exactly as the exam presents them, write your answers, and time yourself. The marking — point-by-point feedback against the criteria, and a score — needs a free account, and, for the full AI examiner, a pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my A2 writing marked for free?

Not on this page, and we tell you before you write. Reading and listening are marked free at every level, because they have an answer key; writing doesn't, and judging it is the work a pass covers.

What's the hardest part of A2 writing?

Register. Most people manage the content; far fewer get the switch between the private and formal message right — and that's exactly what's marked.

Do I need an account to see this task?

No. You get the task, your time, and the marking criteria with no account and no email address. An account is only needed for the marking.

Why isn't my text marked?

Because marking it honestly means judging grammar, vocabulary, task completion and register against the official criteria — a judgement, not a lookup. Prüfungsmeister does that with an AI examiner trained on the criteria, and that's what the pass is for. We'd rather tell you now, before you write, than after.

Is this a real Goethe-Institut exam paper?

No. Old exam papers belong to the Goethe-Institut. This is a practice paper built to the same structure — the same parts, the same number of questions, the same task types — and it's one of the real papers inside Prüfungsmeister, not a shortened version.

Can I try the other parts too?

Yes. Every level has a free page for reading, listening, writing and speaking, plus one for the full exam. Reading and listening are marked automatically; writing and speaking are shown to you as tasks, because marking them needs an examiner — and that's what a pass covers.
