Free Goethe A1 Mock Test: Hören (Listening)

This is the listening part of a full Goethe A1 practice exam — 15 questions in 3 parts, with the recordings played exactly as they are in the real exam. No account, no payment, no email address. We time you with a stopwatch rather than a countdown: the Goethe-Institut publishes the official length for this section and your exam centre confirms it for your session, and we do not state a duration we have not verified.

Listening is the part people underestimate most, because it's the only one you can't slow down. A reading text waits for you; a recording doesn't. If you need A1 for a spouse visa, test this part first: the exam isn't modular, so a weak listening score takes the whole certificate down with it.

What this part asks of you

In 3 parts, you hear short everyday situations — someone asking for directions, a shop announcement, a voicemail about a rescheduled appointment, a short conversation between two people. Each question asks for exactly one piece of information: a platform, a time, a price, a name. Some recordings play twice, others only once — knowing which is worth several points.

The most common mistake at A1 is trying to understand every word. You don't need to. You need the one piece of information the question asks for, and the calm to let the rest go past.

One difference from the real exam: the player here lets you replay a recording as many times as you like. The real exam doesn't — each recording plays a fixed number of times and then it's gone. If you want your score to mean something, play each recording once and move on.

What you get at the end

Your score out of 15, and each of the 3 parts separately. A listening score broken down by part tells you something an overall number can't: whether numbers and times are the problem, or longer conversations.

Before you start

Use headphones if you have them, and check the volume on the first recording. It's spoken at real exam speed, not slowed down.

Frequently asked questions

Is the audio the same speed as the real exam?

Yes. It's recorded at normal speaking speed, the same way the real exam plays it. Nothing here is slowed down for practice — that would make your score meaningless.

Can I replay a recording?

Here, yes — the player has no limit. The real exam works differently: each recording plays a fixed number of times and then moves on. Play each recording once if you want your score to reflect how you'd really do.

Do I need an account for this test?

No. You can do the whole part and see your score and part-by-part result without giving us anything. An account is only needed to see the correct answers and to save your result.

Why can't I see the answers without an account?

Because the answers are the valuable part. Giving them to everyone who loads the page would turn this from a test into a list to copy. Your score and your weak parts stay free. Always.

Is this a real Goethe-Institut exam paper?

No. Old exam papers belong to the Goethe-Institut. This is a practice paper built to the same structure — the same parts, the same number of questions, the same task types — and it's one of the real papers inside Prüfungsmeister, not a shortened version.

Can I try the other parts too?

Yes. Every level has a free page for reading, listening, writing and speaking, plus one for the full exam. Reading and listening are marked automatically; writing and speaking are shown to you as tasks, because marking them needs an examiner — and that's what a pass covers.
